I put together a quick list of things you can do to help Haiti. There are tons of people making themselves available to help, and several organizations that have already been working in Haiti ready to receive your donation. The only reason not to help is to think that this could never happen to you.
If you are in the USA:
1. Text “HAITI” to “90999″ to donate $10 to the Red Cross
2. Text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to Yele Haiti
Yéle Haiti is a grassroots movement that builds global awareness for Haiti while helping to transform the country through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment. Yéle’s community service programs include food distribution and mobilizing emergency relief. Grammy-Award winning musician, humanitarian and Goodwill Ambassador to Haiti Wyclef Jean founded Yéle Haiti in 2005.
3. Donate to Partners in Health
If you are in Canada:
According to the TorontoSun “the federal government will match donations from Canadians to build an emergency fund up to $100 million to help humanitarian efforts in Haiti”. Learn more.
If you are in the UK:
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), a coalition of 13 relief agencies, is taking donations on a special phone line, 0370 60 60 900, and through its website.
Go Local:
In DC: This Saturday, CrisisCamp will bring together volunteers to collaborate on technology projects which aim to assist in Haiti’s relief efforts by providing data, information, maps and technical assistance to NGOs, relief agencies and the public.
In Philadelphia: http://www.hpphilly.org/
In Phoenix and San Diego: Car Wash
