Review
Capital Lights may be newly signed to Tooth & Nail, but they aren’t so new in the music scene. The band was formed back in 2002 under the name afterEight. It was only at the end of 2007 that the band announced their new name on myspace. “Lots of reasons have influenced us in making this decision but most of all is the fact that this band is completely different from the old afterEIGHT”. And with the new name came the new album, This Is An Outrage!
This Is An Outrage! is a perfect summer album. It follows the likes of other Tooth & Nail releases, such as Anberlin, and Run Kid Run. The music is fast, the beats are fast, and the singing is extremely fast. The band mixes a variety of music progressions: power-pop/rock, punk, and even some electronica is fused in. The result of such mixes are extremely catchy songs with a retro sound.
Forget about saving the best songs for the end… This Is An Outrage! kicks off with “Outrage”, “Worth As Much as A Counterfeit Dollar” and “Out Of Control” that pretty much sums up the music you will be listening through the whole album. All three songs are fast-paced, accompanied by “heys”, clappings, long word holding, and even a “gung-ho” (haven’t heard that in a song in a long time). It will get you movin’ in no time. The tempo only slows down on track 6, “Mile Away”, which will take you back in time with its retro sound and mellow chorus. Other songs that standout are “Let The Little Lady Talk” and “The Night Of Your Life Is When You’ll Die”.
Most of the time you’ll be so hooked up on the sound that you won’t even notice what in the world they’re singing about. In fact, in a few songs the singing is so fast, that you can’t follow what Bryson (lead vocals) is saying, much less, his line of thinking. And even though the lyrics are mostly based on relationships (or lack of it), the band stays away from cheesy, and overly sung love stories. Instead they keep it simple, with clever words, fitting as many words as possible in the same sentence. The last two tracks in the album, “The Night Of Your Life Is When You’ll Die” and “Frank Morris” are exception to what is sung throughout the album. Both songs talk about making most of your life while you have it. “Counting on hope only living for the night of your life…”, “…for you to keep your life is let it seem to slip away…”.
This Is An Outrage! is the kind of music you roll your windows down to, on the way to the beach. It’s probably not the kind of music that will last in time, but it will last long enough until the next album comes out!
